Since CBD products found their way into high street shops and online stores, the choices have vastly improved.

Whilst it’s possible to get your hands on everything from CBD oils to capsules, gummies, e-liquids and skincare, you can also choose how you take your CBD – be it just in the morning, two hours before bedtime or both morning and night.

One of the most common ways to take CBD is by placing it under the tongue. This is known as the ‘sublingual method’ and is considered to be one of the best ways to take CBD.

In this article, we look at the effectiveness of taking CBD sublingually in comparison to other methods.

How does CBD work under your tongue?

CBD is often taken under the tongue in the form of a tincture, oil or spray.

You simply open your mouth and place the recommended number of drops under your tongue using the dropper provided.

Then, allowing the oil to sit in contact with the membrane under your tongue, wait 1-2 minutes before swallowing the remaining oil that’s left in your mouth. This prevents any of the CBD from being wasted.

When taken in this way, the CBD can be absorbed through the thin mucus membranes found beneath the tongue. These membranes contain blood vessels that transport blood to and from the heart via the veins, capillaries and arteries.

Therefore, holding CBD here for at least 60 seconds enables it to bypass the digestive system, so it can be absorbed directly into the bloodstream, and the effects can be felt sooner.

4 benefits of taking CBD sublingually

#1 It’s easy

Taking CBD oil sublingually is straightforward.

As we mentioned above, all you need to do is lift your tongue and place a few drops under it. Once you’ve held the substance in your mouth for the full time, you can then swallow it. Or if you don’t like the strong, earthy taste, you can wash it down with water.

#2 The effects can be felt faster

Unlike CBD edibles that you must swallow, CBD oil beneath the tongue doesn’t need to enter the gastrointestinal tract. Instead, it’s absorbed directly into the bloodstream.

Gummies and capsules can take anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours to fully absorb. Sublingual administration will allow the CBD to kick in quicker.

#3 You don’t need any special equipment

Very little effort is required when it comes to taking CBD under your tongue.

It should take no more than a couple of minutes to complete, and all you need is a bottle of CBD oil, a tincture or spray. And possibly a glass of water if you’re not a fan of the taste.

#4 No CBD goes to waste

CBD products that are eaten or swallowed pass through the digestive system and the body automatically starts to break them down.

This is not the case when a few drops of CBD are applied under the tongue – meaning a higher amount will be absorbed and put to good use.

Are there any downsides to taking CBD in this way?

As we’ve established, there are several advantages to taking CBD oil under your tongue. However, it can take some getting used to – especially as placing something under the tongue isn’t something we do often.

At first, figuring out how many drops you’ve used or if your dropper is in the right position can be tricky.

Luckily, there are a couple of things you can do to make this method a little easier, such as using a mirror and carefully counting out the drops.

Though rare, if you experience a reaction after using CBD oil in this way, we recommend you stop using it immediately and consult a doctor.

This is usually the result of using a poor quality product, which is why you must always read the label carefully.

Ideally, you want to opt for a product that is made from natural ingredients, like ours at Peak Organics.

We can assure you that all of our CBD oils are organically grown and third-party lab tested twice to ensure they’re safe and effective. What’s more, they’re vegan-friendly and gluten-free.
