Heard good things about CBD oil?

CBD (short for cannabidiol) is one of the most prevalent chemical compounds derived from the cannabis sativa plant – not to be confused with tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which is a psychoactive cannabinoid.

CBD oil is thought to have medical and therapeutic benefits, and because it’s non-psychoactive, you needn’t worry about getting high. However, some people may wonder whether CBD is addictive.

Here Peak Organics explain a little more about CBD oil – including what it’s typically used for, how it can help you, and whether or not this natural remedy will have you hooked.

What is CBD oil used for?

Cannabidiol is often used to:

  • alleviate pain
  • reduce anxiety, depression, and stress
  • help with insomnia
  • improve heart health
  • ease cancer-related symptoms
  • improve skin conditions
  • reduce seizures

Though more evidence is needed to prove its effectiveness, early studies reveal that CBD oil might also be able to prevent diabetes, reduce acne, help with neurodegenerative diseases (i.e. Alzheimer’s, MS, Parkinson’s, etc.), and lower blood pressure – without creating euphoria or intoxication.

CBD oil and other CBD products have grown in popularity and are widely accepted as beneficial supplements. But some still question the addictive nature of cannabinoids and are worried about the short and long-term effects.

Is it addictive?

Studies suggest that heavy cannabis use may increase the risk of dependency in some people. However, you’ll be pleased to know, CBD doesn’t appear to have addiction-related effects.

Usually, cannabinoids such as CBD and THC attach to receptors in your tissue and cells, specifically the CB1 and CB2 receptors. These are part of the network of neurotransmitters – also known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS) – which plays an important part in regulating bodily functions, including pain, sleep, memory, mood, and more.

THC can cause drug dependency and psychoactive effects. Although some CBD oils contain trace amounts of this cannabinoid, it’s not enough for you to get addicted to CBD. Plus, it won’t give you a euphoric high or impact your cognitive function.

Can CBD oil be used as an addiction treatment?

CBD oil is not addictive and, surprisingly, it’s believed to have properties that can help fight addiction.

Again, more scientific evidence is needed but preliminary studies imply that taking CBD oil could potentially lower the risk of developing cocaine and methamphetamine use disorders. What’s more, it may prevent relapse after a period of detoxification and sobriety – combatting withdrawal symptoms and helping you to stay drug-free.

Research also suggests that CBD oil could help thwart addiction to dangerous substances, such as tobacco. By far the most effective way to get CBD into the body is to apply the tincture directly under the tongue, but you can mix it with food and drink if you prefer.

An alternative to CBD oil would be to switch conventional cigarettes for an e-cigarette. You could then use a CBD-infused e-liquid when you feel the need to smoke. This is a great way to cut down on tobacco consumption, effectively curbing cigarette cravings.

Want to know more about CBD oil?

CBD oil doesn’t produce the same intoxicating effects as THC and is generally considered safe to consume. Due to its low potential for abuse and addiction, the withdrawal effects of CBD oil should be minimal.

Though it’s effective in reducing drug use and common symptoms of drug dependency (i.e. anxiety, impulsiveness, and depression), there are some potential side effects. These include drowsiness, fatigue, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, fertility problems, and interactions with prescribed medications, alcohol, and illegal drugs.
