What is Full-Spectrum CBD Oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is used for all sorts of reasons. For some people, it helps them to manage pain and anxiety, whilst others use it for insomnia, epilepsy, or acne.

If you’ve been toying with the idea of using CBD oil for quite some time, you may have noticed that some labels say they’re made from full-spectrum CBD, whereas others are made from broad-spectrum or CBD isolate.

But what exactly does that mean?

Here the specialists at Peak Organics explain everything you need to know about CBD oil – particularly full-spectrum CBD oil

What is full-spectrum CBD oil?

Put simply, full-spectrum CBD oil is a substance that contains all of the naturally occurring extracts found in the Cannabis sativa plant.

These include:

  • Cannabinoids – out of hundreds, CBD and THC (short for tetrahydrocannabinol) are the two most prevalent cannabinoids derived from the cannabis plant. They are also responsible for the therapeutic and psychoactive effects of CBD products.
  • Terpenes – these affect the fragrance of the cannabis plant and are thought to have healing benefits, much like lavender has a calming effect.
  • Flavonoids – found in all kinds of plants, there are more than 20 different flavonoids in cannabis, believed to have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and neuroprotective properties that are beneficial for various health conditions and ailments.

What’s the difference between full-spectrum CBD, broad-spectrum CBD, and CBD isolate?

Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate are the three main types of CBD, but they have different makeups.

As mentioned already, full-spectrum CBD contains various cannabis plant extracts and may contain up to 0.3% of THC, the cannabinoid that produces the “high” sensation.

Broad-spectrum CBD consists of the same components as full-spectrum CBD – minus the THC. And CBD isolate is CBD in its purest form. It contains no other chemical compounds (e.g. THC, flavonoids, or terpenes).

What are the benefits of using full-spectrum CBD oil?

Studies suggest that taking CBD and THC together – along with the other compounds in the cannabis plant – is more effective than taking CBD on its own. This is also known as the ‘entourage effect’.

As full-spectrum CBD oil is the only type to contain CBD and THC, it’s considered to have more of a potent effect. However, because there is only a small amount of THC, it’s generally not enough to have any psychoactive or intoxicating effects.

With this in mind, many people use full-spectrum CBD oil as an anti-inflammatory to help with:

  • Anxiety
  • Pain relief
  • Epilepsy
  • Muscular spasms
  • Psychotic disorders

Are there any side effects or risks?

Given that full-spectrum CBD oil contains trace amounts of THC, the risk of you getting high and failing a drug test is slim – but it can vary depending on the product and person.

It’s always advised that you read the instructions label carefully to establish how much CBD oil you should take. Large doses of a high-potency product could result in you ingesting enough THC to create euphoria.

Whilst more research is required, full-spectrum CBD oil is considered safe to use, with adverse effects normally happening as a result of medical interactions.

Though rare, potential side effects include:

  • Fatigue
  • Drowsiness
  • Diarrhoea
  • Appetite changes
  • Mood changes
  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

If you’re dubious about taking full-spectrum CBD oil or any other type of CBD oil, it’s best to speak with your doctor. They will be able to advise you on whether you should get started and which products will be best.
